Most of us meet research already chewed up: a headline, a friend's summary, a confident post. So when an actual study lands in front of you, it can feel like a wall of text with no way in. It isn't a wall. It's a building with rooms, and the rooms always come in the same order. Once you know what each room is for, you can walk straight to the one that holds the facts.
Here is the standard floor plan, top to bottom:
Abstract — a one-paragraph summary of the whole study. Convenient, and the most interpreted part of the paper.
Introduction — why the authors think the question matters. Background and motivation, often framed to make their study sound important.
Methods — exactly what they did: who the participants were, what was measured, how, and against what comparison.
Results — what they actually found, usually as numbers, before any spin.
Discussion — what the authors think it means, including caveats and speculation.
Conclusion — the tidy takeaway, the line most likely to become a headline.
Notice the pattern. The facts live in the middle (methods and results). The framing lives at the edges (abstract, introduction, discussion, conclusion). Authors are most free to interpret exactly where most readers spend all their attention.
The counter-intuitive habit this lesson teaches is simple: don't start at the top. Skim the abstract once for orientation, then go to the methods and ask one blunt question.
Read methods first to learn what they actually did. Read results next to learn what they actually found. Only then go back and check whether the abstract earned its confidence.
Methods first: what did they actually do? How many people? Was there a comparison group, or did everyone get the same thing? Was the outcome measured objectively, or did participants rate themselves? Were people randomly assigned, and did anyone know who got what?
Answer every question, then submit to see how you did. You can retake it as often as you like — your score is just for you.

You do not need to follow every statistic to do this. You're not grading the maths — you're checking whether the load-bearing details support the headline. A few plain questions catch most of the gap.
Imagine a paper on microdosing. The abstract reads warmly: "Participants reported improved wellbeing over four weeks." Encouraging. If you stopped there, you'd carry that sentence into the world as a fact.
Now walk into the methods. You find:
The sample was 74 people recruited online, all of whom already microdosed and believed in it.
There was no control group — everyone took the substance; nothing to compare against.
It was unblinded — every participant knew exactly what they were taking.
The outcome was a self-reported wellbeing score, filled in by people who expected to feel better.
Nothing here is fraud. But "participants reported improved wellbeing" now reads very differently. People who chose a practice, knew they were doing it, and rated their own mood, reported feeling better — with nothing to compare them to. The abstract's sentence is technically true and evidentially thin. That gap, between an accurate summary and a load-bearing finding, is exactly what reading the methods first reveals.
This isn't about whether anyone should microdose. It's a reading skill: the same move works on a sleep supplement, a diet, or a new therapy. Walk into the methods, look at the results, then judge the abstract — never the other way around.
The headline is the lobby. The truth is two floors up.
