Most people arrive at the word truffle carrying a picture that's quietly wrong. They imagine a small mushroom, or perhaps the gourmet fungus chefs shave over pasta. A "magic truffle" is neither. Before we talk about species, strength, storage or where it's sold, it helps to know exactly what the thing in your hand actually is — because almost everything that follows depends on getting this one distinction right.
A magic truffle is not a mushroom, and it is not the fungus's fruiting body. What's sold as a truffle in the Netherlands is a sclerotium: a dense, hardened, underground mass of mycelium. Think of it as the fungus's pantry. When conditions get harsh, the organism packs nutrients into this compact lump and stores it below the surface, waiting for better times. The mushroom — what Dutch speakers call the paddo — is the above-ground part that emerges to release spores. Same organism, two very different structures.
A truffle is a survival store the fungus buries underground. A mushroom is the part that pushes up into the air. One organism, two objects.
Here is the part that surprises people. The truffle and the mushroom come from the same fungus and contain the same active compounds. So why does the difference matter so much?
Because in the Netherlands they are treated as two separate things — physically and, crucially, legally. The sclerotium and the fruiting body are distinct objects, and Dutch law drew its line between them, not through the compound they share. We'll unpack that legal line carefully in the next part. For now, hold onto the shape of it:
They are the same organism.
They share the same active compounds.
They are different physical structures — underground store versus above-ground mushroom.
They sit on different sides of the law in the Netherlands.
That last point is the whole reason this course exists, and the reason we start here rather than with anything more exciting.
If you ever handle a fresh truffle, it helps to know what a good one is supposed to be. A healthy fresh truffle is

A quick mental checklist for "this looks right":
Firm and dense to the touch, not soft or mushy.
Lightly moist on the surface, not slimy, filmy or dripping.
An earthy, nutty smell — never sour, ammonia-like or rotten.
We'll return to spoilage in detail in a later lesson, but knowing the healthy baseline now means you can already tell ordinary from off.
The active compounds in a truffle are the same ones found across this family of fungi. The main one is psilocybin, which the body converts into psilocin. Alongside it sit a few minor alkaloids in smaller amounts. That is a description of chemistry, nothing more. This course will never tell you what these compounds will do for you, never promise an effect, and never suggest a truffle treats, cures or improves any condition. We describe; we don't prescribe.
With the basic object understood — a sclerotium, not a mushroom; same organism, different thing — the rest of the course opens up. From here we'll map the species you'll actually meet, why potency varies so much, how to store truffles so they stay good, and how the Dutch smartshop works as the legal place to find them.
Know what the thing is, and every later choice gets clearer.
