In summer, ice-cream sales go up. In summer, sunburns also go up. Plot them on a graph and they march together almost perfectly. Does ice cream cause sunburn? Should we ban the cone to save our skin?
Of course not. A third thing — sunny weather — drives both. That hidden third factor is called a confounder, and it is the reason two things can move together without one causing the other.
This is the heart of one of the most useful distinctions in all of science:
Correlation means two things tend to occur together.
Causation means one thing actually makes the other happen.
Correlation is easy to find and easy to misread. Causation is hard to establish and requires real work to prove.
Now swap ice cream for psychedelics. Suppose a survey finds that people who microdose report better moods than people who don't. Tempting conclusion: microdosing lifts mood. But who chooses to microdose?
Often they are people with more disposable income, more curiosity about wellbeing, more time to experiment, fewer crushing stressors, and a strong prior belief that it will help. Any of those could be the "sunny weather" — the confounder explaining the mood difference. The microdosers and the non-microdosers may simply be different kinds of people to begin with.
A difference between groups doesn't tell you what caused the difference. The people in the groups may not have been the same to start with.
There is a second, deeper reason to be careful, and it is one of the most reliable findings in all of human research: the placebo effect.
When people expect to feel better, they often genuinely do report feeling better — even from a sugar pill, even from a dummy injection. This isn't trickery or weakness. Expectation reshapes attention, mood, and how we interpret an ordinary day. If you take something believing it will make you sharper, you'll notice the moments you felt sharp and quietly forget the rest.
This matters enormously for microdosing, and here's the precise reason:
Microdoses are, by definition, low — often near the threshold of noticeable effect.

Low dose plus subjective outcome is the exact recipe in which expectation can produce most or all of the reported benefit. The subtler the real effect, the more room there is for hope to fill the gap.
So how does a researcher tell a real drug effect from a powerful expectation? They use a placebo control.
Some participants get the real substance; others get an identical-looking dummy. Crucially, the study is blinded — people don't know which they received, so expectation is roughly equal in both groups. If the real-drug group improves and the placebo group improves just as much, the improvement is probably expectation, not pharmacology. If the real-drug group clearly pulls ahead, you may have found a genuine effect.
We'll explore exactly what those controlled microdosing studies found in the next lesson. For now, hold the principle gently.
None of this means your experience is "fake." Expectation is a real, powerful, deeply human part of how we feel — there is no shame in it. It simply isn't the same as a pharmacological effect, and honest science has to tell the two apart. Take less for granted. Notice more about why you feel what you feel.
