For most of human history, knowledge of psychoactive mushrooms lived inside the communities that held them. It was not written about in magazines or measured in studies. It was carried in ceremony, passed between a healer and the people who came to them. The story of how that quiet knowledge became a Western trend is short, recent, and not entirely a happy one.
This part traces that arc at a high level. It is a compressed overview, not a complete history, and later lessons will return to specific regions in far more depth. The aim here is simply to give you the shape of how we got from sacred ceremony to the word microdosing.
A few moments mark the path. None of them should be glorified; several carry real cost.
The mid-century exposure. In the 1950s, outsiders visited Mesoamerican communities, took part in mushroom ceremony, and then publicized it to Western audiences. A widely read account brought sudden attention to practices that had survived quietly for centuries. We will look closely at this in the lessons ahead, but hold one thing now: that exposure brought disruption and harm to the very communities whose tradition it borrowed.
The research interest. The publicity sparked scientific curiosity. Researchers isolated compounds and ran early studies, and for a time these substances moved through laboratories and clinics in the West.
The prohibition gap. That window closed. Through much of the later twentieth century, prohibition pushed these substances out of legitimate research and public life, and serious study largely stopped for decades.
The 2010s resurgence. Interest returned, this time around small, regular doses. The idea was popularized by figures such as James Fadiman, whose writing helped spread the notion of a sub-perceptual dose taken on a schedule.
The word came last. The ceremonies came first, by thousands of years.
Here is a point worth sitting with: microdosing is a modern word and a modern framework. It was coined recently, and it carries assumptions that older traditions simply did not hold.
The communities at the start of this story did not think in milligrams, schedules, or sub-perceptual thresholds. They did not frame what they did as dosing at all. Their relationship was ceremonial, communal, and oriented toward the sacred and toward healing within their own worldview, not toward optimizing a Tuesday. When we use the word

This matters for honesty. It is tempting to draw a clean line from ancient ceremony straight to the modern microdose, as if one naturally became the other. It did not. The modern practice is a new thing, assembled in the last few decades, that borrows substances from much older traditions while leaving most of their context behind.
Everything above is description, not endorsement. Tracing how interest grew is not the same as saying any dose is safe, legal, or good for you.
This overview tells you what happened, not what you should do.
The resurgence of interest is a fact about culture, not evidence of benefit. Popularity is not proof.
The legal and safety cautions from the first part still stand: legal only in the Netherlands for adults 18+, education rather than encouragement, and nothing here is medical advice or a promise of any effect.
With that arc in mind, we can turn next to the specific places and people behind it, beginning where the modern story truly opened.
