Before you ever touch a scale, you need to defuse the single biggest source of beginner confusion: the word dose hides three completely different numbers. People say I take one gram as if that settles it. It doesn't, because they could mean any of these:
Grams of fresh (wet) truffle — the truffle as it is sold and stored, full of water.
Grams of dried truffle — the same truffle after the water has been removed.
Milligrams of psilocybin — the actual active compound inside, the true dose.
These are not three ways of saying the same thing. They are three different quantities, and treating them as interchangeable is how people accidentally take far more than they intended.
A number without its unit is not information. "One gram" tells you almost nothing until you know: one gram of what state of truffle?
Here is the fact that makes the units matter so much: fresh truffles are mostly water. When you dry them, you remove the large majority of their mass — figures commonly cited land somewhere around 65 to 75 percent water loss.
Sit with what that does to the numbers. If you started with 10 grams of fresh truffle and dried it, you might be left with only around 3 grams of dried material — the same truffle, the same psilocybin inside it, but less than a third of the weight. The water left; the active compound stayed.
This is the classic over-dose trap. A fresh-weight target and a dried-weight target are completely different numbers for the same effect. If a friend or a forum mentions "a gram" meaning dried, and you weigh out a gram of fresh truffle thinking you have matched them, you have actually taken a far smaller amount of active material — and the reverse mistake, reading a fresh number as if it were dried, points you toward taking far too much. Whenever you see a dose figure, your first question is always the same: fresh or dried?

The catch is that many written sources — articles, older guides, conversations online — quote dried figures, often without saying so. That mismatch is exactly where people get hurt. So the discipline is not "always use fresh" or "always use dried." The discipline is: always know which weight a number refers to, and never compare a fresh figure to a dried one as if they were equal.
There is a fourth, uncomfortable truth waiting underneath all of this. The real dose — the milligrams of psilocybin — is the one number you cannot read off any scale at home.
No kitchen tool, no precision pocket scale, no home gadget measures psilocybin content. A scale weighs truffle; it cannot weigh the active compound inside the truffle. Every milligram figure you ever see for truffles is therefore an estimate, not a measurement — an educated guess built on averages, not a reading off your own bag.
This is precisely why later lessons treat potency as a variable rather than a fixed property. Because you can measure weight but only estimate the active content, weight becomes your best available proxy — which is exactly why measuring it carefully matters, and why we never pretend a weighed gram equals a known milligram amount.
And a last reminder that frames it all: this concerns Netherlands-legal truffles for adults 18 and over, taught non-clinically. Before you weigh a single gram, learn to ask of every number — fresh, dried, or milligrams? — which one are we even talking about?
