How to Notice Real Change: Tracking Your Microdosing Progress
By Microdosing College Editorial·Last updated May 8, 2026·8 min read
Tracking microdosing progress is not a nice-to-have — it is the closest thing to a control condition you will ever have outside a research lab. The honest science here is sobering: in the largest placebo-controlled microdosing study to date, Szigeti et al. (2021, eLife) found that both the microdosing group and the placebo group improved by similar amounts, with no statistically significant difference between them. That finding does not mean nothing is happening for you — but it does mean that what you believe is happening can powerfully shape what you report is happening. Careful tracking is how you push back against that bias.
This article belongs to our microdosing integration pillar. If you are new to integration as a concept, start there. If you are curious about the expectation effect specifically, see our companion piece .
Why self-report bias matters so much with microdosing
Microdosing is uniquely vulnerable to expectation effects for a simple reason: the doses are sub-perceptual by design. You are not supposed to feel obviously altered. That means you are drawing fine-grained inferences about subtle internal states — exactly the kind of judgment most susceptible to motivated reasoning and confirmation bias.
A naturalistic daily-diary study by St. Pierre, Argento, Cates et al. (2025, Psychopharmacology) followed 1,435 people who self-administered microdoses, finding enhanced psychological functioning reported on dosing days relative to non-dosing days. The authors carefully note the study is uncontrolled and relies entirely on self-report — so we cannot tell how much of the day-to-day difference reflects the substance versus the expectation of having taken it. That distinction matters for your own tracking.
None of this means you should not track or that tracking is pointless. It means the way you track determines whether your data is useful.
Setting up your tracking system before you begin
The most common tracking mistake is starting to log after the first dose, when your expectations are already active. Set your metrics before you begin, ideally during a one- or two-week baseline period.
Decide what you are trying to learn. Be specific. "Feel better" is not a trackable outcome. "Score my mood on a 1–10 scale each evening at 9 pm" is. Common domains worth tracking include:
Mood — a simple daily rating (1–10), anchored with brief notes on what drove the score
Sleep quality — hours slept plus a subjective quality rating, or a wearable's data if you already use one
Cognitive clarity / focus — rated at a consistent time of day, e.g. mid-morning
Anxiety and irritability — often where negative effects appear first
Energy and motivation
Creativity or openness — harder to rate but worth including if that is your goal
Keep the list to five or six domains at most. More domains means more daily friction, which means you stop tracking. Pick the ones that connect to your stated intention for the protocol.
Establish a two-week baseline. Rate yourself daily on your chosen domains before your first dose. This gives you a genuine pre-protocol baseline to compare against, rather than reconstructing from memory after the fact.
Log only at pre-set times. Logging immediately after a dose, when you are primed to notice something, inflates the apparent effect. A reliable rhythm looks like:
Morning (before any dose): sleep quality, energy, mood on waking
Mid-day (3–4 hours after a dose on dosing days, same time on off-days): focus, any noticeable physical sensations, productivity quality
Evening (before sleep): overall mood score for the day, notable events, one free-text note
Separate your dosing-day entries from your off-day entries. One of the most underrated signals in a protocol is how you feel on off-days — if psilocybin's value is partly an integration window rather than an acute chemical effect, the off-days are where any consolidation would appear.
What to log cautiously:
Retrospective summaries of whole weeks are almost useless — your memory will selectively recall the peaks.
"I felt creative today" means very little without a baseline frequency. How often did you feel creative in the two weeks before starting?
Physical sensations on dosing days (mild nausea, slight visual brightening) are more reliable data than mood, because they are less susceptible to motivated interpretation.
Reading your own data: patterns vs. noise
After two to four weeks of dosing, you will have enough data to begin reviewing trends — but review should be structured, not casual scrolling through entries when you are in a good mood.
Schedule a weekly review. On a fixed day (many people use the last off-day of each Fadiman cycle), calculate your average scores for each domain across dosing days and off-days separately. Compare to your baseline averages. Ask specific questions:
Is my average mood score on dosing days higher than my baseline average? By how much?
Are my off-day scores also higher — which would suggest a carry-over effect beyond the acute dosing window?
Are any domains lower than baseline? This matters: negative effects on focus, sleep, or anxiety are meaningful data and should not be explained away.
Flag confounds honestly. Your data does not exist in a laboratory. During any four-to-six-week protocol, life events happen. A relationship shift, a work deadline, a change in exercise or diet — any of these can move your mood independently of psilocybin. Keep a brief "context note" alongside your scores. When you review, ask whether a trend in the scores correlates with a known life event.
The research on expectation effects is clear that people tend to attribute positive changes to the substance and negative changes to external factors. Counter this deliberately: apply the same standard of evidence to both.
Honest caveats about self-tracking
Self-tracking improves the signal, but it does not eliminate the noise. A few honest limits:
You cannot blind yourself. You know when you have taken a dose. The Szigeti et al. (2021) self-blinding design — in which participants genuinely did not know whether a given capsule contained a microdose or a placebo — is not feasible in ordinary solo practice. Your awareness of the dosing schedule will always shape your perception of dosing days.
Regression to the mean. People typically start a protocol during a low period — they are motivated to try something because things have not been good. Some apparent improvement is statistically inevitable simply because extreme states tend to return toward average over time, with or without any intervention.
Apps and wearables help, but modestly. Sleep trackers and HRV monitors provide data you did not generate consciously, which is valuable. But correlating wearable data with dosing schedules is easy to over-interpret; small day-to-day variation in sleep metrics is normal and not protocol-driven.
When tracking suggests a negative trend, take it seriously. If scores on anxiety, irritability, or sleep quality are consistently worse than baseline after three or more weeks, that is not a reason to push through. Use our screener to review whether your situation is suitable for continuing. Nothing in tracking data should ever replace the judgment of a qualified clinician.
Ending the protocol: what a meaningful review looks like
At the end of a standard four-to-eight-week protocol, set aside thirty minutes for a structured end-review. Compare:
Your final two-week averages (dosing days and off-days separately) against your two-week baseline
Any specific goals you set at the start — did the metrics attached to those goals move?
The quality and consistency of your journaling — weeks where you tracked reliably are more informative than weeks where you guessed retrospectively
Write a one-page summary while the experience is fresh. Not impressions — numbers and patterns. Note what you genuinely cannot attribute to the protocol (life events, seasonal changes, other interventions). This summary is more useful than any individual journal entry.
If you worked with a microdosing coach, share this summary with them before any debrief session. The data grounds the conversation and reduces the risk that the debrief becomes confirmation of prior beliefs.
Tracking will not tell you whether to microdose. It will not resolve the placebo question for you personally. What it does — when done honestly — is give you a marginally better basis for deciding whether to continue, adjust, or stop. In a field where expectation effects are demonstrably powerful, that margin is worth having.
Frequently asked
What should I log when tracking a microdosing protocol?+
Track mood, sleep quality, focus, anxiety, and energy using a simple 1-10 daily rating for each. Log at consistent times — morning, mid-day, and evening — rather than immediately after dosing. Keep the list to five or six domains so daily friction stays low.
How long should I establish a baseline before starting to dose?+
Aim for at least two weeks of daily self-ratings before your first dose. This gives you real pre-protocol data to compare against, rather than trying to recall how you felt after the fact.
Can I tell whether my improvements are real or just placebo?+
Not with certainty. The Szigeti et al. (2021) self-blinding citizen-science study found placebo and microdose groups improved similarly, suggesting expectation plays a large role. Careful tracking narrows the uncertainty but cannot eliminate it — you know when you have taken a dose.
Should I track differently on dosing days versus off-days?+
Yes. Log dosing days and off-days separately and compare the averages. Off-day scores showing improvement can suggest a carry-over or integration effect beyond the acute window; they are often more informative than acute dosing-day peaks.
What if my tracking data shows things are getting worse?+
Take it seriously. If anxiety, sleep quality, or irritability scores are consistently below your baseline after two to three weeks, that is meaningful data — not a reason to push through. Review your situation using our screener and consider pausing the protocol. Self-tracking should protect as well as inform.
